Preserving What Makes Lawrence, Lawrence

Kristine Polian for City Commission

Lawrence is more than a place—it’s a living story. From its origins as a Free State stronghold to its present-day identity as a progressive, artistic, and academic hub, our city has always stood for something greater. Kristine Polian is running for City Commission to ensure that as we grow, we never forget who we are or where we came from.

“Preservation isn’t about looking backward—it’s about honoring our roots so we can grow forward with purpose and pride.”

Protecting Our Historic Legacy

Lawrence played a unique and courageous role in American history. During the Civil War, this city stood as a beacon of freedom in the face of violence and oppression. Our resistance to William Quantrill’s brutal raid is not just a footnote—it’s a symbol of our identity and values.

Kristine believes our historic sites, architecture, and neighborhoods must be protected and celebrated—not lost to unchecked development or neglect. She will advocate for

  • Clearer pathways for landmark designation and preservation incentives
  • Partnerships with local historians, preservationists, and educational institutions

Preserving Our Cultural Heartbeat

Lawrence’s culture is inseparable from its identity. From Mass Street galleries to DIY music venues, from the Lawrence Arts Center to public murals—this city pulses with creativity. Kristine sees our arts not as an add-on, but as essential infrastructure.

She will:

  • Fight for stable arts funding and support for creative spaces
  • Elevate local artists in city projects and public initiatives
  • Ensure zoning and development decisions protect our cultural gathering places

Kristine also recognizes the essential role the University of Kansas plays in shaping our cultural and intellectual life—and she supports stronger ties between the city and university to enrich both.

Upholding Our Progressive Values

Preservation isn’t just about buildings or events—it’s about identity. Lawrence has long been a city that stands on principle, often ahead of its time. From abolition to civil rights, LGBTQ+ inclusion to environmental justice, Lawrence has made history by choosing justice.

Kristine is committed to upholding that legacy by:

  • Ensuring inclusive representation in how we remember and celebrate our past
  • Protecting progressive policies that reflect our community’s values
  • Advocating for public education and civic engagement rooted in historical awareness
