Experience That Counts
As the Chief Financial Officer for the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority, Polian oversaw a $10 million budget and managed all financial, human resource, procurement, and IT operations for one of our community’s most vital public service agencies. She worked closely with federal, state, and local government partners to ensure strategic use of resources, and gained a strong understanding of the affordable housing needs within the Lawrence community. Polian commits to bring this same dedication to affordable housing policy and finance to her service on the Commission.
“I’ve spent my career building strong, transparent, and responsive local government systems,” said Polian. “Now, I want to bring that same commitment to accountability, service, and smart growth to the Lawrence City Commission.”

Over 25 Years of Public Service
Her public service journey spans nearly 25 years, with experience in cities both large and small, including Valley Center (KS), League City (TX), Belvedere (CA), and Lawrence.
- As Finance Director in League City, Polian led the city through two successful bond issues totaling $85 million, which she structured to save taxpayers nearly $10 million in future debt service.
- In Valley Center, she helped implement infrastructure projects, a city-wide IT upgrade, a new City Hall, and she improved the city’s customer service, all without increasing taxes.
- She has also streamlined utility billing systems, ensured transparent grant administration, expanded access to employee benefits, and modernized critical city services.
Throughout her career, Polian has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to community-centered leadership. “To serve the public is an honor and should be done with integrity and compassion. Public service is not an action; it is a culture. I commit to creating a government culture that prioritizes customer service for every Lawrence resident, neighborhood, community organization, and business owner. I will also hold City staff and elected officials accountable, making sure we have the best leadership possible during these challenging times.”

What Sets Me Apart From Other Candidates
Polian is set apart from other candidates because of her extensive experience and knowledge of local government management. She has spent a career protecting taxpayer dollars through efficient processes, accountability, and effective leadership. Her platform will focus on fiscal transparency, affordable housing, infrastructure planning, and strong community services.
“I believe Lawrence is a place where progressive values and sound governance go hand-in-hand,” she said. “I’m running for City Commission because I believe my intimate knowledge of and pragmatic approach to city governance will benefit the community. I see our community’s problems; I’ve studied how we arrived here; and I know the actions we must take to move Lawrence in a positive trajectory. I will ensure we make wise financial choices and decisions, invest in sustainable infrastructure, and support policies that serve all residents.”
